Without reliable access to hot water, our life is very different. We have trouble getting dishes clean, cooking daily meals, washing clothes, and more. That’s why it’s so important to keep your water heater running at its best year round. And the experts at Anthony Wimpey Plumbing are here to help you do just that.

    Types of Water Heaters

Two main types of water heaters are available: Traditional and Tankless

Traditional water heaters feature a large tank containing thick insulation and electrical heating elements. Once installed, cold water is pumped into the tank through a tube. There, the heating elements heat the water up until it’s at a temperature of roughly 130 degrees Fahrenheit. The water must stay hot, otherwise bacteria and other harmful substances could grow inside the tank. Once the water is hot, the insulation keeps it at the proper temperature. When you turn on a hot water faucet, water is pumped from the tank through your faucet for you to enjoy.

Tankless water heaters work completely differently. Instead of keeping water hot at all times, a tankless heater heats the water right when you need it. When you turn on a hot water faucet, cold water is pumped through your water heater, heated a heating element powered by propane or natural gas, and then delivered straight to your faucet.

Traditional water heaters are much more common, especially in areas where electrical heating systems are preferred.

How Do I Know I Need Water Heater Repair?

Three signs that you may need water heater repair services

    • If you turn on a hot water faucet, and the water is either cold, or takes too long to get hot, there’s most likely a problem with your heating element.
    • Periodically, you should check your water heater’s base. If you see pools of water around the base of your heater, you have a potential leak, and should call us immediately.
    • If you turn on a hot water faucet and the water coming out of your tap is either cloudy or contains rust, your water heater may be contaminated. Under no circumstances should you or any member of your family drink this water!

If you detect one or more of these signs, call Anthony Wimpey Plumbing today!
